Ever Green rebuilt two rotted exterior stairwells for Portland's, Tucker-Maxon
oral school. Here's
what occurred:
1. PRESURE WASHING. Both stairwells
to remove all failing paint and built up algae/moss as Ever Green tried
to reuse whatever wood was possible.
2. CARPENTRY. Each had
different concerns/trouble areas. The ground level stairwells main support
6"x10" beams were rotted, as were many of the railings, and risers. The
two level stairwell needed completely new risers installed as well due
to rot, and extensive sanding on all railings due to fractured wood. After
both stairwells were rebuilt, Ever Green installed Trex
Decking, a composite made from reclaimed plastic and wood fibers, which
seemed better suited to the exterior elements then wood. Additionally,
the two level stairwell required more 2"x4" supports under the top
deck due to the flexibility of the Trex Decking (Compared with wood.) to
sure up the structure.
3. PAINTING. Prior to installing the Trex Decking, all
wood was primed, and railings sanded smooth. Two coats of low VOC flat
paint was applied to match the Trex Decking tone colors.
4. CLEAN UP. All paper and plastic used
was recycled with metro, all old nails, bolts, and screws were brought
to Far
West Fiber to be recycled, and all remaining Trex Decking was
brought to one of their facilities to be reshaped for a future project.
